Swiss Better Gold update on Minera Yanaquihua, Peru: Reaccreditation as SBG producer

New at Swiss Better Gold

Minera Yanaquihua has achieved its reaccreditation as SBG producer, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the 27 criteria established by SBG to foster responsible gold supply chains.

With the support and technical assistance of the SBG team, Minera Yanaquihua has maintained a sustained commitment to the implementation of its Continuous Improvement Plan, successfully meeting the progamme’s environmental, social and governance criteria.

During this process, Minera Yanaquihua prioritised strengthening environmental and safety management through training programmes for both direct employees and contractors. It also enhanced due diligence processes with suppliers and adopted measures to effectively implement key policies. The SBG team has carried out continuous monitoring through field visits, virtual follow-up meetings, training sessions and regular document reviews.

Following the tragic accident in 2023, collaboration between Minera Yanaquihua and SBG placed particular emphasis on strengthening Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices. A specific action plan was implemented, alongside training sessions for both company staff and mining contractors.

This reaccreditation confirms Minera Yanaquihua’s ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and to carrying out planned actions in coordination with, and with the support of, SBG. Looking ahead, both organisations will continue working together and with artisanal producers operating on the mine’s concession, with the goal of helping them also achieve SBG accreditation under the  new sourcing model for processing plants.

The decision to grant reaccreditation reflects the tangible improvements observed and documented by the SBG team in Peru during field visits and document reviews. It also demonstrates the alignment between Minera Yanaquihua’s commitments and the actions implemented, underscoring its ongoing efforts to strengthen its practices and commitment to responsible mining.
